Correcting our failures, whether they are perceived by others or are only known within our own self is something that all humans wish to do. The truth is we all make mistakes, public ones and private ones. The “failures” to be addressed in this article are the actions that result in outcomes that are less than we sought to achieve. We are not talking about criminal, unethical, or illegal endeavors. The rightful endeavors that we pursue for our happiness as well as that of others are the ones we don’t want to fail.
The first question to answer is “can we truly correct our personal failures”? Sometimes, we can’t undo the damage that a past mistake has caused, or quickly reverse the consequences set in motion by it. But we can make an examination of why we failed, or what caused a particular mistake. Once we have identified the tendency, behavior, or belief that caused us to act in the undesirable way then we can correct the belief or behavior, and avoid the same action in the future. We can’t live in the past by trying to go back in time to redo a bad decision. We can only try to make sure bad decisions are not repeated.
When studying a disease epidemic, investigators try to find the cause—what triggered the outbreak. Why we fail today is often due to an erroneous behavior or belief that was developed in the past. Find and correct the erroneous belief, and we can correct the mistaken behavior.
What is an example of an erroneous personal belief? If we constantly tell our self “I am no good”, “I can never succeed”, “I am prone to failure”, those are erroneous beliefs. Are all negative beliefs about our self erroneous? A belief, right or wrong, is a conclusion that you have drawn based on facts as you perceived them. We can perceive facts erroneously. The erroneous belief that you are no good, or can never succeed is always based on an erroneous perception. Because we all have free will and can develop ourselves according to what is good or what is bad. No matter who we are we can achieve what is good and excellent. Change the perception of what our choices are-what’s possible, and we can change what actions we will pursue.
What is the bottom line in answering the question of how do we correct our failures? The answer is to NEVER QUIT seeking to achieve excellence. A current pursuit of excellence will always correct failure in the same way continually taking a step forward prevents us from going backward. We win as long as we keep seeking to be our most excellent self.
